Helping kids "succeed" shouldn't be focused on racking up achievements. Intensive parenting sends the wrong message to our kids about what we value. #Stoic parenting, in contrast, emphasizes a good life, not a good resume.
I just shared this with my husband. We are considering a move and I’ve been researching schools we’d like to move near. It’s so good to remind ourselves of the achievement trap! Thank you for a thoughtful piece
Thanks, Stephanie! Yes - it is super valuable to research the school environment when you're moving to a new district / school, especially by talking to parents and kids, if you can. I also am heartened by folks who buck the trend of the achievement trap, even in my competitive area. The organization Challenge Success has had some interesting offerings for parents - I recently attended a webinar on "The Well-Balanced Student," where they emphasized giving kids a chance to sleep more, have playtime/downtime, and family time!
I will check out that webinar! And yes to your last line, it's why my kids go to a waldorf school. During times I feel like I don't know what I'm doing as a parent, I always go back to these basic principles and the foundation to a good life (kid and adult!)
